The Atholl – the modern art of the traditional

A subtle new air of elegance exudes at the Atholl Hotel, where 21st-century style marries perfectly with the traditional hospitality much loved by generations.

The historic property, in the west end of Aberdeen, has a fresh but beautifully understated decor in its popular dining room and lounge areas, enhancing the atmosphere but still reflecting the ethos of providing good, old-fashioned service and serving up all the favourite dishes – with a little nod to modernity.

Working with Dovetail Enterprises, which supports workers with disabilities, and interior designer Katie Buchanan, they have created a beautiful new look for both areas, incorporating a palette of pale gold, muted russets and shades of stone. The heavy antique fireplace by the lounge’s bay window has gone, replaced by a gorgeous white surround and pale paisley wallpaper. Gentle terracotta and modern plaid chairs complement the new walnut veneer panels leading to the restaurant.

The new semi-circular banquette seating and large round tables flank the entrance, while a run of the same comfortable taupe banquette extends along one wall, a large mirror reflecting the square tables and subtly-striped backs of charcoal chairs.

Ever popular with locals, the corporate sector and families, the Atholl understands its clientele and prides itself in consistently providing the same high-quality surroundings and food that keep them coming back. As a result, all the Atholl favourites, including North Sea haddock, roast Buchan chicken and mince and skirlie, are still on the menu.

The 34-bedroom hotel, which also caters for a range of events, including weddings, private parties and
corporate meetings, has also upgraded facilities, installing a lift to the upper floors and revamping its Oakhill function suite, one of two which offer unrivalled views over the city. This investment in a lift and refurbishment is testament to the commitment by the hotel to ensure that all its customers continue to receive the same fantastic service and can enjoy all areas of the hotel without restriction. Above all, the team at the Atholl want you to come and experience their new look and not to forget about this gem in the west end.
