Peterhead manager to give Motherwell amateurs maximum respect

Jim McInally is hoping for a Scottish Cup run for Peterhead this season.
Jim McInally is hoping for a Scottish Cup run for Peterhead this season.

Peterhead manager Jim McInally will name his strongest possible side to take on amateurs Colville Park in today’s Scottish Cup tussle.

The Blue Toon will be strong favourites to progress against the Motherwell side, who compete in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League.

But McInally has warned his players to underestimate today’s opponents at their peril.

He said: “We know the pressure is on us this week.

“Colville Park are a decent side. My brother watched them last week and he said they are a good football team.

“They are not your usual amateur team.

“They are like the Gretna of the amateur scene and they get players of a good level.

“Guys turn down the opportunity to go juniors to play for them because they are well looked after.

“They have a lot of ex-professionals in their squad and some good players.

“Even during the week they signed Darren Miller who had just left Queen’s Park.

“We have been well warned about them.

“I don’t have the luxury to rotate the squad for this one because we have several guys missing through injury.

“Marc Lawrence is out for a few weeks with a back injury, while Paul Cairney and Samson Gabriel remain out.

“But even if I had a full squad it would be the strongest possible team.”

McInally’s side were knocked out of the competition with a 1-0 home defeat by Alloa Athletic last term but would love a cup run this season.

He added: “The Scottish Cup hasn’t been kind to us in the last couple of years as we have had some horrible draws against Livingston and Alloa.

“We have a winnable tie in this round and if we get through, hopefully we get another winnable tie in the next round and we can get in the draw with all the big teams.

“That is what the Scottish Cup is all about for us.

“I am looking forward to the match.

“It is always exciting when the Scottish Cup comes around.”
