No bids for Caley Jags goalkeeper Fon Williams, says Robertson

Caley Thistle manager John Robertson says the Highlanders have received no firm offers for goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams.

Wales international Fon Williams has been back at Caledonian Stadium since returning from a loan spell with American outfit Indy Eleven at the turn of the year, having won the United Soccer League side’s player of the season award for 2018 after impressing in his 36 games for the club.

The 31-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, is among Inverness’ highest earners but has not featured for Caley Jags since October 2017, when injury caused him to lose his place to Mark Ridgers.

Robertson insists Fon Williams’ future remains unclear, and he said: “We have spoken to Owain and he has got a wee groin problem at the moment, although he is still training.

“There have been one or two nibbles, but nothing that has warranted anything more than an inquiry.

“It’s another situation, very similar to Liam Polworth, that we are not in control of. All we have to do is react to whatever crops up.”

Midfielder Polworth is also out of contract this summer and is the subject of interest from Premiership clubs including St Johnstone, however he has yet to indicate to Robertson where his future lies.

Robertson is preparing contingency plans should Polworth move on before the end of the January transfer window, however the Caley Jags boss does not feel the uncertainty has affected his performances.

He added: “Unfortunately we are not in control – Liam is in a situation where clubs can freely talk to him about signing a pre-contract. We just have to sit and wait.

“A club could sign Liam and then leave it until the summer which is not ideal for us.

“If they come for him now, it would involve either a fee or perhaps a swap player.

“We just have to sit and take it on the chin – there’s nothing we can do. We have asked Liam’s agent to be kept abreast of the situation but we have had nothing but a blank from him.

“If we feel Liam is fully focused and concentrated he will play and if not we will have to look at somebody else. But given his attitude so far, in terms of commitment to the club, I wouldn’t see that being a major problem.

“All we can do is monitor the situation as best we can, have plans in place ourselves in case something happens late on, but it’s due to the fact Liam’s contract has been allowed to run out at this particular age he has got to which has left the club pretty much defenceless.”
