23/02/19 LADBROKES CHAMPIONSHIP PARTICK THISTLE v ROSS COUNTY (2-4) THE ENERGY CHECK STADIUM AT FIRHILL - GLASGOW Ross County co-manager Steven Ferguson at full time

Ross County co-manager Steven Ferguson is determined to leave tonight’s opponents Ayr United trailing in the Championship title race.

County go into tonight’s Victoria Park encounter with a five-point lead over the Honest Men, with a game in hand still to play.

Ferguson has urged his side to make the most of the opportunity to extend the gap ahead of Ian McCall’s men, and he said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity – one we will be looking to take.

“We are at home and we come off the back of the 4-2 win over Partick Thistle on Saturday with the players feeling good about themselves.

“There’s no reason why we can’t go again on Tuesday, but obviously giving Ayr the respect they deserve.

“We will need to look after our business, but we can’t pretend it’s not an opportunity to put distance between ourselves and Ayr. That’s what we will be trying to do.”

Ferguson fell short of saying a County victory this evening would end Ayr’s title aspirations however, adding: “I wouldn’t rule Ayr out if we beat them, that’s for sure.

“The league is so crazy, I genuinely believe there are so many twists and turns to come this season.

“There are just five points between bottom and sixth place, so everybody is within striking distance.

“Any team that puts some sort of run together will jump places, and any team that puts a bad run of form together will definitely drop places.

“I don’t think you can write off anybody – I think one team will rocket and one team will plummet. That’s what happens with the rollercoaster of a season.”

Midfielder Ross Draper could return for the Staggies after missing the victory against Thistle with an ankle injury, with Ferguson adding: “There is a chance Ross could come back into the group.

“He was a big miss for us on Saturday, as he has been so pivotal in the season we are having.

“It’s testament to the group we were able to go down and put together such a convincing victory without so many key players.

“Because we are winning games and performing as we are, it goes amiss sometimes.

“It was another big player that wasn’t playing for us, but we are really happy with the squad we have got.

“If we need cover we’ve got depth in the squad that is able to do that.”
