Huntly’s Kirstie Gordon called up for England’s Ashes Test with Australia

Kirstie Gordon has made rapid progress in women’s cricket since she started her career as a teenager at Huntly.

And the 21-year-old, who played for Scotland in the 2017 World Cup qualifier, has now been named in England’s Ashes Test squad for the one-off meeting with Australia on Thursday.

The north-east woman, who was named as one of the five breakout stars in the women’s game last year, represented the North of Scotland at football and tennis.

But, after getting involved in junior cricket at school and with Huntly CC, she performed for the men’s first XI aged 14 and took four wickets on her debut.

When Gordon switched from playing for Scotland to England, she initially described it as “a massive risk”.

But it’s one which has paid off and Gordon is now on the verge of becoming the first Scottish cricketer to make the ascent to the Test stage since Gavin Hamilton earned a single appearance for England in 1999.

She has been drafted into the England squad, which will take on the Australians at Taunton in a must-win game for the hosts.

The left-arm spinner impressed colleagues and opponents alike in November’s World Twenty20 tournament before suffering a lower back stress fracture.

But she has recovered and is likely to be in the starting line-up.
