Granite City Open darts event dates are switched to 2021 because of Covid-19

Chairman of the board: Derek Weston, an organiser and men’s team manager for Grampian Darts Association, toasts what he is sure will be an action-packed event.

It has been a fixture on the north-east darts calendar since the 1980s.

But the organisers of the Granite City Open have confirmed they have postponed the 2020 event and are drawing up plans for its return next year.

After working with management at the venue, the Aberdeen Airport by Best Western Hotel, and receiving guidelines from the Scottish Government, they have decided the competition could not go ahead from October 2 to 4, after being switched from its original date of July 22 to 24.

Tournament director, Derek Weston, said: “We needed to think about players’ safety as they travel from far and wide to take part.

“It’s obviously disappointing that this year’s event will not go ahead, but we know all sports are having to respond to what is an unprecedented situation.

“We are delighted we can start getting ready for 2021 with backing from our sponsors in place and are very grateful for their support.

“The Granite City Open has been a popular event for many years and we will now start planning for the 2021 event in late July.

“Danny Turner, the general manager at the venue, is also hoping we can hold another tournament – perhaps called the Granite City Classic – earlier in 2021 but once again, that will depend on what is happening with Covid-19.

“Sean McLean from Gibb Tools, the company which sponsors the men’s singles event, has told us he will be supporting events in 2021 which gives us great optimism for the future.”
