The public have been given the chance to bid online for a piece of Scottish sporting history when a stump from Scotland’s historic cricket victory against England goes under the hammer to raise funds for motor neurone disease research.
Scotland made history earlier this month when they defeated the world’s No 1 ranked side at The Grange in a thrilling ODI.
The stump, which has been signed by Scotland cricketers George Munsey and Preston Mommsen, is part of an online auction to support the Gordon’s Fightback campaign in raising money for MND Scotland to invest in cutting edge research.
The event coincides with a fundraising dinner being held to celebrate the life and legacy of MND campaigner Gordon Aikman who died of the terminal neurological condition in February 2017.
The Gordon’s Fightback Dinner is being held tomorrow – on World MND Day – in Edinburgh and will strive to boost funds to tackle the curently incurable condition.
It will feature a live performance from Deacon Blue’s Ricky Ross and a live auction will be announced by Scottish rugby legends Doddie Weir – who himself has MND – and 1990 Grand Slam hero, Scott Hastings.
Speaking from the Netherlands where he is playing for Scotland in a tri-series T20 tournament against the Irish and Dutch, Munsey who donated the stump, said he was delighted to be involved in the initiative.
He added: “However much I might prize this momento of an amazing, historic day, it would be an even greater prize if its auction helped to find a cure for MND.
“I hope someone will dig as deep as we did to win it!”
