Van der Weg hopes to have grasped Staggies chance

Ross County defender Kenny van der Weg believes he has shown manager Jim McIntyre his abilities at left back.

Dutchman Van der Weg replaced the suspended Jay McEveley, and helped County record an impressive clean sheet in their 0-0 draw against Rangers at Ibrox.

It was Van der Weg’s first start since the opening day 3-1 defeat to Dundee last month, in which the summer signing from NAC Breda was substituted during the first half after struggling at wing back.

The 25-year-old believes he will blossom at left back and said: “I didn’t play for a few weeks but the chance to play at Ibrox was a good start for me.

“It was amazing – a really good stadium with a lot of people. That is what I want to experience as a football player. It inspires me, I live for the biggest games.

“It was important for me to show the manager what I can do and how good I am. Saturday, I think, was a good game for everybody.

“In pre-season, in the first two games, I played left back and it was all right. Then we changed to play with three defenders and two wing backs. I got my chance on the left wing. It was all right, but it is not my position. Then we returned to a back four but I wasn’t picked.

“I had to wait my chance and that’s not easy. I always want to play. I waited for my opportunity and I think the performance against Rangers was good.

“I’m now looking to stay in the team and play every week. That’s what I want. I got my opportunity and I have to take it. Now I have to show the manager I have to play.”

Van der Weg feels he is gradually adapting to Scottish football, and added: “In the beginning it was a bit different for me. Now I know everything expected of me and my English is better.

“I can understand more and have a feel for the football. We play quicker than what I knew in Holland. We are quite fast and direct. Now I know that, it is better for me.”
