McInnes still in the market for more players

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is targeting more players after completing a treble swoop of signings this week.

Shay Logan has signed a permanent deal with the Dons after a successful loan spell from Brentford and he will be joined at Pittodrie by central defender Ash Taylor and goalkeeper Scott Brown after they signed pre-contract agreements with the club from Tranmere Rovers and Cheltenham Town respectively.

McInnes is pleased to have the recruits on board and intends on adding more talent to his squad.

He said: “We would like to add another one or two if possible but it has to be players capable of challenging the squad we have here.

“We had the nucleus of 10 to 12 players last season but people outwith Aberdeen implied we had a larger squad which we didn’t.

“We’ve brought in new players but they have been replacements for players who left.

“We had versatile players who went to the well week after week for us and it’s going to a be a longer campaign than normal this season and it’s important we add some depth.

Despite veterans Russell Anderson and Barry Robson committing their future to the club for another season the average age of the squad at Pittodrie has decreased after the departure of Scott Vernon and Nicky Weaver.

McInnes has been keen to promote youth at the club but knows the importance of getting the balance right.

He said: “We started the season with two young full backs and they have the potential to do well, but it should be remembered we are still a young team.”

“We need to keep working towards further improvement and getting players signed up certainly helps.

“We are trying to improve things as we go along and the players aren’t daft. They can see what we are trying to do here and have shown they want to be part of it.”
