VIDEO AND POLL: Who should win FIFA goal of the year?

The two best goals from the summer’s World Cup face competition from a female Irish footballer for the title of FIFA’s goal of the year.

As expected, James Rodriguez’s stunning strike for Columbia against Uruguay and Robin Van Persie’s perfect diving header for for Holland against Spain make the shortlist, however, the final member of the shortlist is Stephanie Roche – the first ever female to make the list.

The Republic of Ireland women’s international netted a stunning volley for Peamount United against Wexford in October 2013 and her sublime technique has now been recognised with a place on the shortlist alongside two of the biggest names in the men’s game.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Roache said: “I’m happy my goal is getting recognition, it’s brilliant for me and brilliant for women’s football.

“Most of our games aren’t filmed so I was lucky enough in that respect.

“My manager Eileen Gleeson got the DVD off the Wexford Youths manager, then edited the clip and put it up on YouTube and it all went from there.

“The ball was crossed in from the right, I had my back to goal and I had my first touch with my right foot”.

“I put the ball onto my left foot and then volleyed it into the goal and spun the defender.

“It’s only just sinking in that it was a good goal and it’s getting the attention.”

But which goal deserves the Puskas Award?
