20-goal Aberdeen striker Declan McManus makes PFA shortlist

Aberdeen attacker Declan McManus believes he has become a better player following his season on loan at Morton.

Dons forward McManus has scored 20 goals this season and has helped the Cappielow side into promotion contention with two games of the season to go.

His displays for the Greenock club ensured he made the shortlist for the PFA Scotland League 1 player-of-the-year award yesterday.

Peterhead midfielder Jamie Stevenson has also made the four-man shortlist.

McManus is thrilled his campaign with the Cappielow club has been recognised and said: “It is a great honour to be nominated, especially as it is my first full season playing in professional football.

“Being nominated is made even more special because it has come from my fellow players. It is a good feeling.

“I have loved every minute of my time at Morton. For me football is just about being happy and enjoying the game.

“Playing at Morton gave me the chance as the manager does not quite think I am just ready for Aberdeen yet. I asked for the chance to go back out on loan in January as I feel I will become a better player from playing more games.

“To be playing in games of that stature, chasing a league title, it is all very good experience for my development.

“I have scored 20 goals this season and I am pleased that I have played my part.”

McManus faces competition from Blue Toon midfielder Stevenson, who has scored seven goals in 34 appearances for his club this term.

The other contenders for the award are midfielders Alan Trouten, of Brechin City, and Stranraer’s Willie Gibson.
