Andy Robertson plays down £30million price tag

Scotland's Andy Robertson is looking forward to returning to former stamping ground Hampden Park this week
Scotland's Andy Robertson is looking forward to returning to former stamping ground Hampden Park this week

Scotland defender Andy Robertson has played down suggestions from his Hull City manager Steve Bruce that an offer in the region of £30 million would be required to prize the left back away from the KC Stadium.

Robertson has been strongly linked with a move after thriving in his first season with the Tigers, despite the club suffering relegation from the Premier League.

Manager Bruce’s response to a £12 million evaluation of the former Dundee United player was it would not be enough to even buy Robertson’s weaker right foot, insisting he rated the 21-year-old just on a par with Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, who moved to Old Trafford from Southampton for £30million last summer.

Robertson, preparing with the Scotland squad ahead of Saturday’s crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Republic of Ireland in Dublin, is refusing to get carried away with the hype.

The 21-year-old said: “My right foot, as most people know, is useless and has not been on show much.

“I don’t agree with my manager there. The comments are obviously quite flattering towards me, but I don’t really read into it.

“He might have had a few beers on holiday. We’ll wait and see. I’m just looking forward to getting a break after this game.

“It makes me feel good that the manager holds me in high regard. It was amazing what Luke Shaw did at Southampton and he’s maybe struggled a bit going to such a big club this season, but I’ve got no doubts he’ll come back firing.”

Robertson is determined to end his season on a high by helping Scotland defeat the Irish at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, after suffering relegation on the final day of the season with Hull.

Robertson added: “The relegation will go with me until the end of my career. But it’s out of my head. I’m focused.

“I’ve moved on and now I’m looking forward to the Ireland game. Once each season is done, I just have to try to forget about it.”

Scotland are two points ahead of Ireland in third place in Group D, with midfielder Shaun Maloney getting the winner in a 1-0 win for Gordon Strachan’s men in the sides’ last meeting at Parkhead in November.

Robertson, who did not feature in Scotland’s 1-0 friendly win against Qatar at Easter Road on Friday, anticipates a bullish response from Martin O’Neill’s side.

Robertson added: “We know how Ireland play, from Parkhead the last time. We know what to expect.

“The Qatar game on Friday night was a good game for all the players involved. But all our focus is on the Ireland game, and trying to get a big result. Some of the players finished the first week in May, so they’ve had a bit longer to think about the game. There’s a build up of excitement now it’s so close – it’ll be a massive game and we’re all looking forward to it.

“It will be the exactly same as the last match. It wasn’t like an international match, it was more like a cup tie. Luckily we were the ones who got the three points.

“If we can do that again, we’ve done our jobs. There were a few big challenges going in, especially early, but that’s to be expected in any game.

“We played very well that night, but we’re focused on Saturday now and that match is forgotten about.”
