Gary Woods keen to extend Staggies stay

Ross County goalkeeper Gary Woods wants to extend his stay in the Highlands beyond January.

Woods joined the Staggies on loan in September from English League Two club Leyton Orient to compete with former Partick Thistle goalkeeper Scott Fox, also signed by manager Jim McIntyre in the summer.

Fox started the season as first choice, but an ankle ligament injury in the 2-1 derby defeat against Caley Thistle in October paved the way for Woods to enjoy a prolonged run in the side.

The Englishman has started the last seven matches, although he now faces competition as Fox returned in Tuesday’s Development League defeat against Dunfermline.

Woods is up for the challenge of retaining his position, and having enjoyed his spell in Scotland so far he wants to discuss the possibility of an extended deal with McIntyre.

The 25-year-old said: “I’ve still got over a month left, but it would be something I would hope sit down with the manager about, and sort something out if it works for both parties.

“I’ve not spoken to Leyton Orient about it, but I’m playing at the minute, and if something can get sorted out it would be perfect for me and the club.

“Competition is only good. I know in every training session and in the games, I need to be as good as I can or my place is going to be taken.

“I just have to take each game as it comes and perform to the best of my ability, and hopefully then I can continue playing.

“It’s all new to me. I’m going to different grounds I’ve never been to such as Pittodrie and Tynecastle.”

County are sixth in the Premiership, but following last weekend’s 3-1 defeat against Aberdeen the Staggies aim to return to winning ways against St Johnstone tomorrow.

Woods believes there is more to come from the Dingwall side this season, and added: “It’s a very good team. I don’t think we get enough credit for our quality.

“Everyone says we’re such a hard-working team, but as everyone has seen in certain games we can play very good football as well.

“For me, coming into a team like this, with a management team who are so positive, can only help.”
