Aberdeen manager looking to spend wisely as transfer deadline approaches

Derek McInnes has been linked with the vacant Rangers job.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes says he still has funds left to strengthen his team before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The Dons, who are expected to make a fresh bid for Preston forward Stevie May, set-up a Betfred Cup quarter-final against the Steelmen with a 1-0 win against Hamilton Accies on Wednesday.

Greg Tansey, Nicky Maynard, Gary Mackay-Steven and Kari Arnason have all been recruited during the summer, while Ryan Christie and Greg Stewart have joined the Dons on loan for the season.

And McInnes has not ruled out more new additions before the August 31 deadline with the Dons understood to be weighing up a £300,000 bid for long-term target May, who played under the Aberdeen manager at St Johnstone.

He said: “We still have a bit of the budget left to play with.

“That doesn’t mean to say I will definitely use it.

“We still have money to spend if we feel we can.

“It is not a lot of money but we know we can add if we need to add.

“We will see how things develop over the next few games and hopefully the performances are good and we don’t need to do too much.”

McInnes, meanwhile, is confident fatigue won’t be an issue when the Dons, who were knocked out of the Europa League by Cypriot side Apollon Limassol last Thursday, take on Ross County in their second Scottish Premiership fixture of the season tomorrow.

The Staggies could make several changes to freshen things up for this weekend’s meeting in Dingwall after suffering a 3-2 defeat by Motherwell after extra time on Wednesday.

McInnes is also contemplating tinkering with his line-up as the Dons bid to continue their flawless start to the domestic campaign.

He said: “We’ll dust ourselves down and see how the boys are physically.

“We’ll go up there Friday night and pick the freshest team and one capable of getting the result.

“It’s our fourth game in nine days and we’re mindful of that.

“The players will get Sunday and Monday off, it’s now just about one big effort to try and get another three points.”

Adam Rooney (thigh) remains a doubt for the match. The Irishman has not featured in Aberdeen’s past four matches.

Referee Don Robertson will take charge of this weekend’s match against the Staggies.
