Aberdeen slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Rangers following a poor display at Ibrox.

The Dons were 2-0 down inside the opening half hour at Ibrox on what a disappointing night for Derek McInnes’side in Glasgow which was compounded by Ryan Christie’s late sending off.

The Dons boss made one change to the side which beat Kilmarnock 3-1 at Rugby Park on Sunday with Kari Arnason returning in place of Gary Mackay-Steven who dropped to the bench.

Rangers interim manager Graeme Murty made two changes to the team which lost 2-1 at Dundee on Friday with Carlos Pena and Bruno Alves restored to the starting 11. Daniel Candeias dropped to the bench while Alfredo Morelos missed out due to a hip injury.

Aberdeen arrived at Ibrox hoping to build on their win on Sunday but they found themselves a goal behind after seven minutes.

Greg Tansey was rash in his attempt to block Jason Holt and succeeded in conceding a penalty which James Tavernier converted by sending Joe Lewis in the Dons goal the wrong way.

Rangers kept the pressure on Aberdeen and they deservedly doubled their lead as Holt broke through the Aberdeen backline before crossing for Pena to score from close range.

Aberdeen responded in the second half and enjoyed good spells of pressure in the Rangers half but their hopes of getting back into the game were sunk when Tavernier scored his second of the game and his side’s third 20 minutes from time.

The Dons’ miserable evening was compounded by the dismissal of Ryan Christie for a second bookable offence following a foul on Ross McCrorie.
