Derek McInnes: Creativity, speed and quality in the final third has been lacking at Aberdeen for months

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is determined to tackle the attacking deficiencies in his side before the transfer window closes after watching his Reds fall four points behind Motherwell at Pittodrie last night.

The Steelmen became just the second visiting team to leave Pittodrie with all three points this season after Liam Donnelly’s header gave Stephen Robinson’s side a huge win in the Granite City.

For the Dons, it was another night where they struggled to impose themselves offensively and McInnes is ready to take action.

It is understood a renewed bid to bring Matty Kennedy to the club from St Johnstone will be made today as the Aberdeen manager’s patience with his forward line wears thin.

He said: “I’m looking for more up front. We are too reliant on Sam Cosgrove.

“We were decent enough in midfield but the lack of cutting edge and passing in the final third cost us. But creativity, speed and quality in the final third has been lacking for months.

“Hopefully we can get the necessary players in during this window that can help in that department.

“It hasn’t been there for the last couple of months. I’ve said it before the window opened and while the window has been open.

“We’re all looking for more quality, consistency and a threat in the final third. We’ve always had it here but we’re lacking at the minute.”

While there was disappointment in the Dons camp Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson was thrilled to see his side leave Pittodrie with all three points but warned it is too early to talk about securing third place in the Premiership.

He said: “I’m delighted with the result. To come here is a hard task as I’ve got the utmost respect for the Aberdeen players and staff.

“It’s a compliment to Derek and his side that they have only lost to one other side here. It’s testament to the job he has done and also to how well we’ve done in coming up here and performing well.

“If I’m being critical, we can be better but we had to put our bodies on the line and be disciplined – it was one of our best away performances.

“Aberdeen have a lot of physicality and Cosgrove is a top player but we dealt with him well.

“We expected the onslaught and made personnel changes to cope with it. We rode our luck a couple of times but we earned that little bit of luck tonight.

“You look at the age of our squad and the levels we are getting week in, week out. It’s absolutely fantastic but it’s still early stages.”
