Daugava Riga was formed in 2003 as FK Jurmala and immediately won the Latvian First Division championship and with it, promotion to the Latvian Higher League.
They finished fifth in the top flight but struggled to break into the top three leading to a financial crisis in 2007.
The club was almost declared bankrupt in 2010 but was saved by its sponsors, leading to a name change where they became FK Jurmala-VV.
Financial problems continued in 2011 as the team narrowly avoided relegation and with three clubs in the city of Jurmala in the top flight the club relocated to the 5,000 capacity Daugava Stadium in Riga, forcing another change to its current moniker of FK Daugava Riga.
They finished ninth in the division in 2012 and managed to survive in the top flight thanks to a play-off win against BFC Daugava.
Better fortunes followed for the club, managed by Lithuanian Virginijus Liubsys, and they finished fourth last season, qualifying for the first qualifying round of the Europa League.
Daugava have struggled to maintain their form in 2014, however, and are currently seventh in the 10-team league after 17 matches.
