Goodwillie ready to prove himself all over again

David Goodwillie has signed a new one year deal with Aberdeen

David Goodwillie is determined to get his career back on track following his move to Aberdeen.

The 25-year-old has returned to Scotland permanently following three years in England with Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

When Blackburn paid £2.8million for Goodwillie’s services in 2011 he was rated as one of the hottest properties in the country.

His move to England was viewed as the ideal chance to focus on his football too following two convictions for assault. The forward has put his off field problems behind him, but has returned to Scotland needing to prove himself all over again after being released by Rovers following two uninspiring loan spells with the Arabs and Blackpool.

The former Scotland international is up for the challenge of proving himself again.

He said: “It’s a one-year deal and we will see how it goes. My target is to play as often as I can and score as many goals as I can for Aberdeen. I hope I’ve come back to Scotland a better player. There were highs and lows from time there but I learned a lot in my three years down south.

“If I do get a Scotland recall that would be a bonus but right now I just want to work hard.

“Hopefully I’m not too far behind. I’ve got a bit of catching up to do but hopefully I can do that in the next few days.”

Goodwillie was adored by the United supporters and he knows his return to Scotland to play for their New Firm rivals has not gone down well in the Tangerine half of the City of Discovery.

He said: “Hopefully they will realise I did it for my career. I’ve still got a lot of love for the club but I need to do my best for Aberdeen now.””
