Match report: Aberdeen 2-0 St. Johnstone

Goals from David Goodwillie and Cammy Smith helped Aberdeen move to the top of the Scottish Premiership with a 2-0 win against St Johnstone.

Goodwillie opened the scoring with an overhead kick after seven minutes in a match the Dons dominated from start to finish but they were left hanging on in the closing stages after failing to take a number of goalscoring chances until Smith netted in injury time.

The win moves Derek McInnes’ side to the top of the table above Celtic, whose match against Partick Thistle was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

And with the Hoops not back in action until Monday, the possibility is there for the Dons to open up a four point gap over Ronny Deila’s men if they can beat Motherwell on Sunday.

Shaleum Logan returned for the Dons after missing the 1-0 win at Inverness with a calf strain, while the Saints also made one alteration with Gary Miller stepping in for the absent Brian Easton.

The Dons made the perfect start with only seven minutes on the clock when Niall McGinn showed great awareness to pick out Goodwillie in a packed penalty area and the Dons attacker did the rest, chesting the ball into the air before producing a superb overhead kick which beat the despairing Alan Mannus with the aid of a deflection.

A second goal for the Dons was correctly chalked off in the 37th minute when Goodwillie was adjudged to have handled before setting up Peter Pawlett who slid the ball under Mannus.

Aberdeen made a storming start to the second half in their pursuit of the next goal which would kill off St Johnstone but their profligacy in front of goal was astounding with Rooney and Ryan Jack both missing the target from close range when it looked easier to score.

But deep in injury time, the Dons netted a second when Adam Rooney set up Cammy Smith who slotted home from close range to earn Aberdeen a sixth successive league victory.
