Aberdeen FC: McInnes urges patience over transfer targets

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is prepared to be patient in the pursuit of his transfer targets this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Stevie May and Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn are among the players already linked with a move to the Pittodrie club.

One major acquisition has been completed, with Caley Thistle’s Graeme Shinnie having already agreed a three-year contract with his hometown team.

The Dons will return to competitive action on July 2 in the Europa League but McInnes will not rush his recruitment process ahead of the first round qualifiers.

Instead the Aberdeen manager is ready to hold his nerve to ensure he brings the best players to Pittodrie.

He said: “I would imagine there will be at least a couple of players coming in.

“We are in a fortunate position where we have the majority of the squad nailed down.

“We can look forward to pre-season and the first game in Europe with a lot of confidence given what we have in the building and what will be coming in.

“If we can add to that before pre-season starts then great.

“I am confident we may well be able to agree something with one or two players, but it may take longer than that to get something done.

“The first game is on July 2 but the window doesn’t close for nearly two months beyond then.

“We have the luxury of time to hopefully make some good decisions.”

McInnes accepts that, with limited finances available, his club will have to be smart with its money.

He added: “The budget is the same so we are not all of a sudden awash with money to be able to do this or that. We have to use what we have to work with wisely.

“We don’t need to just get bodies in. We can pick where the improvement needs to be or try to bring something different to the squad to give us other options. That is what we will do in the weeks ahead.”

Premier League club West Bromwich Albion have exercised an option to extend defender Donervorn Daniels’ contract for one more year.

The 21-year-old, from Montserrat, spent the second half of last season on loan at Aberdeen, making 10 appearances and scoring one goal.
