Dons keeper Danny Ward hoping to make Wales squad for France 2016

Danny Ward hopes his loan move to Scotland can ultimately take him to France next summer.

The Liverpool goalkeeper has made an immediate impact at Pittodrie, establishing himself as first-choice goalkeeper after his season-long loan from the Anfield club.

He has already added European football to his CV and he hopes his increased profile can also catch the eye of Wales national team manager Chris Coleman.

Ward, a product of the Wrexham youth academy, has represented his country at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level.

He was called up to the senior team for the first time for a friendly match against Finland in November 2013 and was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw.

With the Welsh national team currently basking in the dizzy heights of ninth in the Fifa world rankings and on course to make the European championship finals in France next summer Ward hopes the timing of his arrival in Scotland could open the door for a summer to remember next year.

He said: “I’m playing games now at a good level and that can do me no harm in terms of staying around the Wales squad.

“It’s been a work in progress for quite a few years now, going back to the days when Gary Speed was in charge.

“A lot of the players have come together through the under-21s and we have got a lot of hungry young guys who are pushing on.

“Then you have the superstars like Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale in the team as well and that is working for us.

“If you want to get into that squad you are going to have to be playing really really well and that’s the aim for me.”

If Ward is trying to catch the national manager’s attention he is certainly going about it the right way.

He has already become a cult hero among the Dons supporters and with Aberdeen boasting a 100% winning record so far in the Scottish Premiership the outlook at Pittodrie is positive at present.

But with Dundee making the trip to Aberdeen today the 22-year-old knows the Reds must maintain their solid start.

He said: “It’s only been a couple of games but it has been a good start and hopefully we can continue that against Dundee.

“I’ve signed a long-term contract with Liverpool but that’s not on my mind at the minute as the aim is just to do well in every game for Aberdeen.”
