Derek McInnes discusses Aberdeen summer transfer plans

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes there will be no need to make wholesale changes to his squad when the transfer window reopens this summer.

The majority of first-team players are secured on contracts beyond the end of the season but defender Shay Logan, midfielder Barry Robson and goalkeeper Scott Brown are entering the final months of their deals.

On-loan forward Simon Church will return to parent Championship club MK Dons at the end of the campaign, while fellow loanee, goalkeeper Adam Collin, will become a free agent when his contract with Rotherham ends this June.

Aberdeen attacker David Goodwillie will also be out of contract when he completes his loan spell with Ross County.

McInnes is confident of the quality in his side and will tinker rather than make wholesale changes.

He said: “I think we have done a lot of good work over the last few seasons to try to get stability and we have seen the benefit of it.

“We have good players who are happy here and we have created a good environment that can offer these players so much.

“Any player is happy playing for a team that can potentially bring them success.

“Players have to do their bit to help us get there but I feel we are in a good place with the squad.

“There will be a few moving on and a few coming in but there won’t be wholesale changes.

“As a manager it is important to improve the first-choice team as well as make little changes to the squad that can help us get better. Our young players will be another year further on and it is up to them to force their way into the team on a regular basis.”

The Dons yesterday confirmed they have sold out their allocation for next Friday’s final match before the split, against Hearts, while more than 14,000 tickets have gone for Sunday’s lunchtime kick off against Hamilton Accies.

McInnes added: “It is so important our supporters turn up in good numbers on Sunday and get right behind the team.

“I think the early kick off can have an unnatural feel to it when the game starts and there can be a bit of a malaise at times.

“It is important it’s not the case this Sunday and we need to have Pittodrie absolutely rocking.

“The players need to be ready to go to work to get the crowd interested in the game as well.

“There is a tough challenge there but the motivation to win the game is clear.”
