Paul Hartley urges Cove Rangers to embrace new challenge ahead of Connah’s Quay trip

Cove Rangers boss Paul Hartley wants his side to embrace stepping into the unknown against Welsh side Connah’s Quay Nomads.

It will be the furthest Cove have ever travelled for an away game and the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup game will also be televised on Welsh channel S4C.

Cove will be the fifth Scottish side Connah’s Quay have faced in little over a season, with Queen’s Park, Edinburgh City and Ross County coming across their path in last year’s competition.

They grabbed headlines over the summer when they knocked Kilmarnock out of the Europa League in the first qualifying round and are managed by Andy Morrison, the former Man City defender born in Kinlochbervie in Scotland’s north-west.

Hartley’s side will travel to Wales tonight and stay overnight, with players taking time off work to accommodate the arrangements.

The Cove boss said: “It’s different for the players. It’s a longer journey and we appreciate the commitment they have to make in taking time off their jobs.

“Our preparation has been as good as ever, in making sure the players know as much as they can about Connah’s Quay. Their manager came up to watch us against Stirling Albion, which shows they respect us as much as we respect them.

Connah’s Quay knocked Kilmarnock out of the Europa League in July.

“We go in there as underdogs but we’re going to try win the game. It’s on TV, which is a first for the club, and we want to do ourselves justice.”

Cove have beaten St Johnstone’s colts and Brora Rangers to get this far, while the Nomads made it to the final of last season’s competition before they were beaten 3-1 by County.

Connah’s Quay come into the game unbeaten in their first four Welsh Premier League games, with a win and three draws to their name.

Hartley added: “Getting through would show how car the club have come in a short space of time. We’ve had a fantastic start to the season and it’s something new for us.

“We’re in good shape. I’m not sure if we’ll be able to travel with the strongest squad – we’ve got a couple of players who are touch and go.”

The game will kick-off at 5.15pm tomorrow at the Deeside Stadium.
