Cove Rangers have appointed former Kilmarnock and St Mirren regular Alan Combe as their goalkeeping coach.

Combe, who left Premiership side Hibernian in the summer, reunites with Cove manager Paul Hartley after the two worked together at Alloa Athletic.

He replaces John McCafferty, who had held the post for five years but stepped down last week due to work commitments in his native Dundee.

Hartley said: “When John informed me he had decided to leave Alan was the first name I thought of. I knew he had just left Hibs and I really enjoyed working with Alan when I was manager of Alloa. I’m delighted to be reunited with him because I know we’ve managed to get our hands on a top class, experienced, goalkeeping coach.”

“Alan will definitely help to get the very best out of our goalkeepers, it’s a great appointment for us.”

Combe will work with Cove number one Stuart McKenzie and youngster Balint Demus, who has stepped up to the first-team squad. He also turned out for Dundee United, Bradford City and Morton during his playing career and has also been goalkeeping coach at Hearts.

Hartley thanked the departing McCafferty for his services, having been at the club since leaving Montrose in 2015.

He added: “We fully understand John’s reasons for leaving and wish him all the very best for the future. He was vital member of the club’s playing staff over the last few years and I also enjoyed working with him since arriving at the club.”
