Elgin City boss hopes to drive underdogs to Galabank success

Elgin City are two points ahead of Annan Athletic in League Two but Black and Whites manager Jim Weir believes his players are underdogs at Galabank today.

Annan go into the match in fine form having won six of their last seven matches and are aiming to make it five on the bounce against the Moray outfit.

Third-placed Elgin are looking to create a gap above their hosts in order to move a step closer to clinching a play-off place but Weir expects a difficult encounter against the form side in the league.

He said: “There are very few sides in this league who have won four games in a row and Annan have kept three clean sheets in that period as well.

“They made a couple of signings in the January transfer window that have made a huge difference. They will be full of confidence having won these games, so they go into the game as favourites.

“We want to atone for the 2-0 defeat against them at Borough Briggs in October and try and pick up from where we left off in the second half of our 0-0 draw against Arbroath.

Leading scorer Shane Sutherland has not played since picking up a knee injury in the 4-1 win against Clyde on February 18 and Weir says this weekend’s match could come too soon for the 24-goal attacker.

Weir added: “He’s very doubtful. He’s working with the physio and we’re always hopeful but he’s certainly unlikely to start the game.”

City also have doubts over midfielders Jamie Reid, who has a rib injury, and Chris Dodd (groin strain).
