Elgin without a win since February… but Nicolson remains hopeful in promotion bid

Elgin City are without a victory since February but midfielder Mark Nicolson would not swap the Black and Whites’ position in the race to secure a League 2 promotion play-off berth.

City have gone eight matches without recording a win since beating Berwick Rangers 1-0 on February 25.

Elgin are third in the table and four points above both Stirling Albion and Montrose, who are looking to push into the top four. Elgin also boast a superior goal difference.

Nicolson knows his side still has the advantage but says City must keep matters in their own hands.

Elgin travel to Clyde today and Nicolson said: “Obviously some of the boys are lacking a bit of confidence given we are on a poor run.

“Clyde have been on a poor run as well. They are scrapping for their lives and that could make it even more difficult for us, although we have something to play for as well.

“We have got just as much to play for – we are hoping to get into the play-offs.

“I said a long time ago we only need a couple of wins – although we have still to win since I said that. But a win against Clyde would be a huge step towards the play-offs as we would be at least four points ahead with three games to play, while other results could go for us as well.

“We have also got the goal difference which, in effect, is another point for us, as if it comes down to that ours is better than everybody else’s below us.

“Obviously, we are glad to be third, we have got that going in our favour, but we don’t want it to come down to that. We want to get the points on board to wrap it up.”

Elgin are searching for their first win at Broadwood since a 2-0 triumph in March 2015 but Nicolson is eager to end his side’s wait for a victory.

The 28-year-old added: “Our record there is not really that great but we beat them 4-1 at Borough Briggs the last time we played them in February.

“I know we’re not on the best of form but neither are Clyde. We’ve just got to build on the positives from the games we’ve had, and hope we can get a much-needed result.”
