Elgin City chairman Graham Tatters believes the issue of league reconstruction should not be driving talks to end the lower league season.
Dundee, who have still to cast their vote on the SPFL’s proposal to call the Championship, League 1 and League 2 season, yesterday revealed reconstruction talks were at the “forefront” of discussions held in recent days.
Tatters feels reconstruction should be treated as a separate issue until consensus is found on the initial proposal, which the Borough Briggs outfit supported.
Tatters said: “I think reconstruction is a knee-jerk reaction to what is happening.
“We have discussed it as a board of directors, because it came up. We feel at this moment in time it’s not a subject to be discussed.
“There’s a possibility some teams might not be able to survive this, so we need to get some consolidation and stability in the set up.
“They are two mutually exclusive items and one needs to be dealt with, so we know what we are doing next season, without bringing in league reconstruction which is a complete and utter minefield.
“If we want to go for reconstruction after that we will get round the table and discuss it, but at the moment we just see it as a red herring to everything.
“The people that want it are the people suffering from the resolution.
“It’s not a thing that could be glossed over in a couple of weeks, I think it would take a while to sort it out.”
Tatters hinted he would have concerns over any potential expansion to the SPFL set up, adding: “Every time it is mentioned people are flying in on social media about what the ideas should be and how you should do it.
“The last thing we want to lose is any home games, and we don’t particularly want to have the leagues made bigger when you’ve got more than 42 clubs, as that dilutes the revenue.
“We are quite concerned about it if it happens.”
Tatters says the Black and Whites, who are third in League 2 at present, stand by their vote in favour of the SPFL proposal.
He added: “We voted for it because there was no way there was going to be play-offs. Once they were cancelled there was no point in having a battle for the sake of it.”
