Elgin City midfielder Daniel Moore is determined to keep his side clear of bottom spot by getting revenge on Albion Rovers at Borough Briggs today.
Elgin’s 2-0 win against Berwick Rangers last week moved them off the foot of League 2 for the first time since Jim Weir replaced Barry Wilson as manager last November.
Rovers are behind leaders Arbroath only on goal difference. The Lanarkshire team beat Elgin 4-0 at Borough Briggs last October and 3-0 at Coatbridge two months later.
Moore ranks Rovers as the best side the Black and Whites have faced this season but is eager to take advantage of the first of several home fixtures.
He said: “We’re off the foot of the table, so we have to make sure we don’t let it slip. We need to keep the momentum and keep going up the league. It was a big relief to come off the bottom, so that’s got to be our springboard.
“We’ve got to capitalise on our home games. We’ve played 19 games but only seven have been at home, so we’ve still got nearly half a season to play. Most teams are a month ahead of us, so we’ve a lot to catch up on in a short space of time.
“We’ve played most teams twice now and Albion Rovers have probably been the best team we’ve played so far. Rovers don’t give much away defensively and they score goals as well. But the two games against them have probably been the worst we’ve played all season. We’re in for a good test.”
Today’s match is City’s first home fixture since the 1-1 draw against Arbroath on December 2.
Rovers are the only team to have inflicted defeat on the Moray side in Weir’s five games in charge and he hopes his side’s recent form puts City in a better position to test Darren Young’s men.
Weir said: “Albion Rovers are a good side and are at the top of the table for a reason. They were also the last team to beat us but I would like to think we are a different side now. When they played us the last time we were still at the stage of losing a goal and our heads going down but hopefully that has changed.”
