‘Elgin City are the team nobody wants to play in League 2’

Elgin City defender Matthew Cooper believes his club is the team no-one wants to play in League 2.

The Black and Whites have put a horrendous start to the campaign behind them to move from bottom of the division to within touching distance of the play-offs.

City’s resurgence, however, has left Cooper daring to dream of City extending its season by being part of the promotion race.

He said: “We know on our day we can do well against any team and crowds have got bigger with each result. We don’t fear anyone and teams don’t like coming to Borough Briggs due to the form we are in.

“If we can keep this form going we know who knows what can happen in the remaining games?

“There are six games left and it’s going to be an exciting finish.”

Saturday’s 3-0 win at league leaders Albion Rovers was the latest in a series of several impressive wins and performances by Jim Weir’s side, who can move to within a point of fourth-placed East Fife it they beat Berwick Rangers tonight.

Cooper, who has switched to a right back role since the new manager’s arrival in December, insists the praise for the club’s revival should go to the man in charge.

He said: “The manager does a lot of work on the shape of the team and he encourages us to get on the ball at every opportunity.

“I’ve played at centre half but since moving out wide he has encouraged me to get forward and attack more. It’s something that’s new to me, but I’m enjoying the chance to push up the pitch.

“The first thing the manager did when he came in was emphasise the fitness levels. Tuesdays are when we work on our fitness and we do our shape work and preparation for Saturdays on a Thursday.

“There is pride in our performance and the whole atmosphere at the club has changed.

“Saturday showed that. It was another clean sheet which is great and teams are finding it hard to break us down now.”
