Jim Weir: Elgin cannot afford any slip-ups in League Two title charge

Elgin City manager Jim Weir says there is no room for off-days in the Black and Whites’ hunt for the League 2 title.

City trail leaders East Fife by a point ahead of today’s home match against Montrose after last weekend’s 1-0 defeat by Clyde.

Today’s game is the first of seven before the end of the campaign and Weir says City must maintain their standards in the chase for their first promotion since entering the league in 2000.

Weir said: “We’ve got to kick on and put last week’s disappointing result out of our system.

“In the second half against Clyde we were very unlucky, with a big decision going against us, but over the next seven games we’ve got to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal.

“We bounced back from the previous defeat by East Fife with three points against Stirling Albion and we need to do that again.

“We were below par against East Fife and we cannot afford too many of those performances in the last seven games if we want to keep challenging at the top of the league.”

Montrose boast one of the best home records in the league, with eight victories at Links Park, but despite Paul Hegarty’s side winning just twice on the road this season Weir is not taking today’s opponents lightly.

He added: “They are similar to ourselves in that their home form is better than their away form, although they’ve had a couple of good results away from home recently.

“We played well against them at Borough Briggs last time when we won 2-0. I’m not under any illusions, though, it will be a difficult game for us.”
