Cove Rangers striker Mitch Megginson is closing in on 50 goals this term but maintaining the club’s unbeaten record is far more important to the former Aberdeen and Alloa Athletic player.

John Sheran’s side will be presented with the league trophy at the conclusion of tonight’s match against Forres Mechanics at Harlaw Park, Inverurie.

Megginson, whose players have won 28 of their 31 league matches this term, wants to end the season in style.

The 25-year-old said: “They always say that there’s nothing to play for in end of season games but that is certainly not the case in this one.

“We don’t want to lose any games at all and we want to build momentum to take into the SPFL pyramid play-offs,

“Forres have enjoyed a couple of good results recently and they now have a good chance of finishing in the top four which would earn them a place in next season’s IRN-BRU Cup.

“Wherever we play Forres we know what we’re in for, which is a real battle.

“They have got some really good players so we will have to be at our best to get anything out of the game.

“We know that we will be presented with the league trophy and our medals after the game but you only really enjoy a moment like that properly if you come off the pitch with a win to give you an extra buzz.”

As regards his own personal goal-scoring targets, Megginson, with 48 goals to his name so far this term, added: “It would be good for me to hit the half-century mark on a personal basis but the team winning is the most important thing. I’m hoping to get to that landmark quite soon.”

Forres are three points ahead of fifth-place Fraserburgh, although the Broch have a game in hand and superior goal difference.

Manager Charlie Rowley said: “We need to win this game but we know that no other club has beaten Cove in a league game this season.

“We are on a high ourselves after our recent run but we realise the enormity of the task facing us at Harlaw Park.

“Cove are by far the best team in the Highland League and they will be full of confidence after winning the title.

“We have everything to play for and we will have our first choice goalkeeper, Stuart Knight, back again after he missed Saturday’s 2-1 win at Turriff United.”
