Fraserburgh assistant boss James Duthie believes his side should have beaten 10-man Buckie more convincingly in a Christmas cracker at Bellslea.

Thistle had keeper Daniel Bell sent off in the first half, but almost emerged with a share of the spoils after a determined performance.

Broch striker Paul Campbell was the match-winner for the hosts thanks to two second-half strikes, the second of which came from the penalty spot, much to the delight of Duthie.

He said: “Buckie battled playing with 10 men for most of the game and were a danger on the counter attack.

“However, we were the better side with 11 men on the park and I don’t know how we didn’t put the game out of sight.

“We were careless with the final pass and shot.

“It’s been a recurring theme for the last few weeks with a lot of chances not finding the net. However, we deserved to win and it’s another big three points.

“Some of our play in both halves, but especially the first half was excellent and we deserved to be further in front at half-time, but Buckie dug-in with 10 men.

“I said to Paul Campbell after the recent Formartine game that it’s important that he keeps his fine goalscoring run going.

“He’s one of the top strikers in the league.

“However, there’s plenty more to come from him. He’s athletic, strong and quick.”

The hosts took the lead inside 11 minutes, when Campbell picked out Scott Barbour, who found the bottom left-hand corner of the net from close range.

Barbour nearly added a second shortly afterwards, but a good save by Daniel Bell denied the forward.

In the 37th minute, Buckie were reduced to 10 men. Barbour was brought down by Bell on the edge of the box and referee Dan McFarlane immediately showed the keeper a red card.

Buckie kept battling and won a penalty before half-time after Kyle McLeod was fouled by Brian Hay. Up stepped Sam Urquhart who levelled matters by smashing his penalty down the middle.

The Broch went ahead just before the hour mark through an effort from 12 yards out by Campbell, which evaded a packed Buckie rearguard.

Thistle levelled again, in the 73rd minute, thanks to a great finish by Andy Macaskill.

However, the Broch got the decisive fifth goal after Campbell was brought down by Jack Murray. The forward dusted himself off before he beat Lee Herbert from 12 yards out, as he fired the ball into the bottom right corner.

Buckie Thistle manager Graeme Stewart was sent off at full-time for remarks made to a linesman.

Before being notified of the decision, Stewart said: “It isn’t a sending off for Daniel Bell.

“Daniel was already out of his box so he’s got to make a challenge and there were three defenders there, so it was a ridiculous decision. We were poor in the first half, however a bit better in the second half. We were better with 10 men.”
