Brora chief William Powrie ‘sincerely hopes’ fans will get to see opening day clash with Inverurie Locos

Highland League champions Brora Rangers will take on Inverurie Locos at Dudgeon Park on the opening day of the 2020-21 season.

The Highland League have released the first three rounds of fixtures, which are “contingent upon receiving government advice that matches may proceed with spectators in attendance.”

The league will be decided over a 16-game with sides facing each other only once.

This month, the Scottish Government delayed the indicative date for the return of spectators by three weeks to at least October 5.

But, with coronavirus cases rising, that could be pushed back further.

Brora chairman William Powrie said: “It is a great game to look forward to on the opening day.

“I just sincerely hope we will have crowds back. The Highland League have thought there wouldn’t be any games without crowds so unless that situation changes I don’t know if the game will be going ahead.

“I hope if crowds are still not allowed, perhaps there can be some reconsideration towards matches behind closed doors.”

He added: “In a truncated season, you can’t afford any slip-ups so they will all be big games.”

Inverurie Locos boss Andy Low said of the fixture: “It is great and it gives us something to plan towards. We obviously couldn’t get a tougher start.

“But if you have any ambition about yourself, like we have at Inverurie Locos, you look forward to games like this one.

He added: “With the way things are going at this moment in time, it appears it is going to be difficult to get spectators back in the grounds for October 17.

“But the big thing that I have realised through all of this is that things change very quickly.”

The Highland League has also announced the semi-final ties of the 2019-20 Utilita Highland League Cup will be held on Saturday 7 November 2020, with Brora Rangers taking on Buckie Thistle and Formartine United facing Rothes.
