Fraserburgh advanced to the last four of the Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield with a 4-0 win over Aberdeen University.

After hemming in the away side for much of the first period, the Broch finally went ahead in the closing stages through Ryan Sargent.

Logan Watt and Scott Barbour extended the lead after the interval before the latter bagged his second to seal progress.

Fraserburgh, already holders of the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup, included four teenagers in their starting line-up, with Zane Laird, Callum Kelly, Kyle Wood and Watt drafted in.

The visitors did their best to frustrate Fraserburgh in the opening exchanges, with Lewis Davidson’s shot, which sailed over the crossbar, from just inside the box all they had to show for their efforts.

Paul Campbell flashed an effort across the face of the Uni goal after 20 minutes and while they were repelling the Broch attacks, John Dutton’s side were gifting possession straight back and putting themselves under pressure.

Jamie Beagrie’s header sparked a goal-mouth scramble five minutes later, with goalkeeper Ben Barbour keeping out the initial attempt and Sargent unable to turn the rebound home.

Sargent missed a glorious chance on 33 minutes, after Laird pulled the ball back to him eight yards out. The forward tried to send it back where it came and the shot went harmlessly wide.

He would make amends in the final minute of the half, however, as Fraserburgh finally got the breakthrough.

Greg Buchan collected the ball and fed a pass through to Sargent, who clipped over Barbour into the far corner.

The students changed goalkeepers at half-time, with Frederick Bjerregaard replacing Barbour, and he watched on as Laird’s fierce drive fizzed over the bar.

The substitute stopper was picking the ball out of his net on 52 minutes after the Broch capitalised on his poor kick out. Campbell seized on it and released Watt, who produced a carbon copy of Sargent’s finish to double the lead.

Bjerregaard had another moment to forget just after the hour as Scott Barbour – on the field for less than 30 seconds – had a shot which the goalkeeper spilled through his legs into the net.

The Uni’s best chance came with 12 minutes to go after great work by Jonathan Onwa sent Oscar Forbes free. He clipped the ball round Paul Leask but Davidson swept in to recover.

Barbour grabbed his second shortly after, with Campbell’s strike too hot to handle for Bjerregaard and the striker was quick on the scene to convert.

Willie West hit the bar in the closing stages as Fraserburgh eased into the semi-finals.

The Broch are back in action on Saturday, as the reigning Highland League champions welcome leaders Buckie Thistle to Bellslea.
