Cove close to confirming ground share plans

Cove Rangers’ quest for a temporary home should be resolved in the next two weeks, according to chairman Keith Moorhouse.

Cove bade farewell to Allan Park last month with a 4-0 win against Fort William in their final league game at their Aber-deen home of 67 years.

With Allan Park not able to meet the SFA’s club licensing rules, which come into force next season, Cove have sold their ground and will move to a new stadium at Bobby Calder Park at nearby Nigg.

But their new home will not be ready in time for the next campaign, meaning Cove have had to find a temporary groundshare solution.

Chairman Moorhouse is confident his search is nearly concluded.

He said: “We had to wait to get the SFA approval for groundsharing next season until February. In March we got approval from the Highland League’s management committee.

“It was only then we could actually sit down with clubs and start talking seriously about groundsharing next season.

“Until then it was all pie in the sky stuff, because if we didn’t get any approvals it was all going to be wasted time.

“We have had to be patient. Our supporters want to know now what is going on but we can’t tell them anything for certain. I would rather wait until everything is in place before making any announcement.

“What I can say is we are in discussion with several clubs and I am very hopeful of a very positive outcome over the course of the next few weeks, certainly well in advance of the start of next season.

“We appreciate the supporters’ patience but we have to make the right decisions for our club.”

Highland League officials are sympathetic to Cove’s plight and have given the club the option to play home games at more than one ground in the new campaign.

Secretary John Grant said: “Once we do the Highland League fixtures for next season we will then talk to Cove Rangers and look at the grounds they have proposed for groundsharing. I have asked for a minimum of three, but they can have four if they want.

“The first thing I need to know from Cove is which will be their registered ground. It would have to be licensed and then have confirmation from that club they have agreed to groundshare with Cove.

“But I will not be in a position to do the fixture list for next season for the next fortnight, until we know whether it will be Brora Rangers or Montrose playing in the Highland League next season.”
