Formartine United: The derby gloat tinged with a little sadness

Formartine United
Formartine United

It’s always fine to beat the Locos and after the August debacle where for the one and only time in my life, I saw five keepers in the same game, victory this time was really sweet.

That sweetness was  edged with just a wee bit of the sour and what took the slightest edge of the victory for me was just how easily we won it.

I’m  sure the injury that put paid to big baldy Bavidge in the 10th minute was a blow to the Locs – it certainly left them with little shape up front thereafter but whatever way you look at it, this was still a very easy victory for us against a flat, unambitious Locos where flare and creativity simply weren’t there.

It’s not that they didn’t try – they chased the game (chasing shadows really) throughout, but the gulf in class between the teams was obvious.

Rivalry between ourselves and the Locos goes way back to the days when we were both in the Junior ranks and derbies have always been keenly contested, close run affairs.

Not so on Saturday and that’s where my wee edge of sadness creeps in.

We need a strong Locos for the derbies to continue to have meaning – you don’t get much sense of achievement from successfully pushing at an open door – a bit like the Locos defence at the weekend.

Barbour, Gauld and Cammy Keith tore them apart – we were three up by half time and although only winning the second half by a single goal we moved the ball about sweet and slick throughout and they never really got a sniff.

It’s a funny League this season with Brora fading and homeless Cove winning everything in sight so far. They’re next up but won’t be anything like as easy as Locos were.
