Elgin City have arranged to face Caley Thistle in a pre-season double header ahead of the start of the Betfred Cup.

Both games will be played behind closed doors with venues still to be confirmed, with dates of Saturday, September 26 and Friday, October 2 provisionally marked in the diary.

The games will give newly-signed Caley Thistle striker Shane Sutherland an early opportunity to face his former club, having moved from the Black and Whites earlier this summer.

The two clubs are both involved in the Betfred Cup group stage, however each side will only play a maximum of three games in the competition prior to the start of the league campaign on October 17, with the final two match days scheduled for November.

Elgin manager Gavin Price says the games against John Robertson’s Caley Jags, along with matches against Highland League sides Brora Rangers and Lossiemouth, have been arranged in order to ensure his side do not lose out on match preparation ahead of their league opener away to Stranraer.

Price said: “I know it has changed this year, with a couple of games later on, so we just need to see how the fixtures come out and tailor the rest of our pre-season around that.

“We arranged these games before we realised we were not going to get the four League Cup games before the start of the league season.

“We always want these four testing games before the season starts. In past times it has worked quite well in our preparation for the season.

“We have the two games against Inverness, and games against Brora Rangers and Lossiemouth before the season starts.

“That will give us six games to go into the season hopefully.

“We have already arranged the fixtures we want to play before the league starts, so all going well hopefully we can play these games.”
