Blue Toon boss excited by tense title race in League 2

Jim McInally's side were beaten 3-0 by the Pars at East End Park.

The League 2 title race is shaping up to be a keenly contested one this season and Peterhead manager is delighted.

The Blue Toon have the chance to go top of the table tonight when they travel to Stirling Albion in a rearranged league fixture.

Just five points separate top four in the division and McInally is bracing himself for a testing second half of the season.

He said: “It’s going to be a real fight to the finish this season but personally I think that’s a good thing. When so many teams are involved it means so many teams have reason to be motivated every weekend and are incentivised to get a result.

“I believe that’s good for the league and good for the clubs as whoever wins the title is going to know they’ve had to work hard for it and have really earned it.”

Peterhead’s 3-0 win against Edinburgh City on Saturday, coupled with defeats for Stirling Albion, Elgin City and league leaders Montrose’s draw at Clyde mean three points for McInally’s side tonight will take them above the Gable Endies on goal difference.

McInally said: “We could have played better on Saturday but I’ll take a result before a performance any time but especially at this stage of the season.

“Results elsewhere made it a really good day for us but the big thing has been us clawing back the gap. We were seven points behind at one stage and now we have the chance to lead the table.

“That speaks volumes of the character of the players here and we’re looking forward to the Stirling game as a result. We’re on a good run, confidence is high and the players are hungry for the next game.

“We’re in a good place at the moment.”

Scott Brown and Marc Lawrence have been ruled out for the game but McInally has no fresh injury worries following the weekend and hopes to see his side make amends for their home defeat to the Binos earlier in the campaign.

He said: “Stirling mauled us at Balmoor and left us chasing shadows for much of the game so it would be nice to gain revenge at their place.

“What they did in the first quarter of the season was excellent and they deserved to lead the table.

“They will want to get back to the top as soon as they can but we’re determined to get a result.

“We started so slowly against them the last time we played and we know we have to come out the blocks quickly this time.”
