Peterhead manager Jim McInally says it will be special to come up against his old club Dundee United in the League Cup group stage.

The Blue Toon have been drawn in Group C alongside the Tangerines and fellow Premiership outfit St Johnstone. League Two Brechin City and Lowland League champions Kelty Hearts make up the section.

The fixtures, which will be played in October and November, have still be to be confirmed.

Balmoor boss McInally made 395 appearances for United over 10 years and two spells at Tannadice.

He said: “I’m happy with the group, obviously there still things to be worked out with fixtures and venues and whether crowds will be able to attend.

“But from a football point of view it’s fantastic and a great test for our players.

“From a personal point of view it’s always special to come up against Dundee United.

“United was the main part of my football career and I’ve got so many great memories from my time at Tannadice so it’s always nice to play them.

“It would be good to play them at home and be able to have a crowd because we’ve never played them competitively at Balmoor.

“It’s a good tie and special for me still living in the city. If we managed to get a result I might get a bit of stick when I’m out about, but that would be great.

“When you play bigger clubs the first thing you always want to achieve is to earn their respect, give them a hard game and show you belong on the same pitch as them.

“With the teams we’re playing we might get a live TV game out of it, that could be a great showcase for the club.”

Meanwhile, former Peterhead midfielder Jack Leitch is set to join League Two side Stirling Albion having left the Blue Toon earlier this summer.
