Boss reckons Peterhead can still make play-offs

Peterhead have it all to do if they are to clinch an end of season play-off place, but manager Jim McInally reckons his players can still claim a top four finish.

The League 2 champions were denied victory in a crucial League 1 match at rivals Brechin City on Tuesday when they conceded an injury time equaliser from a contentious penalty kick.

The Blue Toon had to settle for a share of the spoils with City, who remain four points ahead of McInally’s team in fourth place.

Peterhead face an even greater challenge today when league leaders Stranraer visit Balmoor. With the finish line in sight, McInally knows there is now little margin for error.

He said: “There are six games to go and we need to win most, if not all of them. But these players have been brilliant for me and I know they’re capable of doing it.

“We’ll need some breaks to go our way, but one result is not going to change what we’re doing and we still believe there will be more twists and turns.

“I said on Tuesday football is cruel, but all we can do is take the blow on the chin and try to move on. We feel the decisions made in the game went against us, but it’s over now.

“This is our first season in the division and we’ve competed with a lot of the teams up there which have been together for two or three years.

“It shows how well we’ve done that we’ve been up there with them.”

Midfielder Dean Cowie, who missed the draw at Brechin due to work commitments, is available for today’s game along with attacker Rory McAllister, who was forced off after suffering a back injury in the opening 20 minutes at Glebe Park.

McInally said: “Rory’s job as a plumber doesn’t help as he has to do a lot of bending. He was in a lot of pain as his back went into spasm, but we expect him to be all right.”
