Jim McInally relishing Peterhead selection headache

Manager Jim McInally hates leaving players out of the team but his hard-headed selections are working for Peterhead.

McInally had a string of talented performers beside him in the Stair Park dugout and, while it gives him no pleasure to keep key players on the sidelines, he believes the tactic is reaping its rewards.

He said: “I have been a manager for a number of years and I always hate leaving players out.

“However, we have a number of talented players and I have had no choice but to leave some out.

“It’s creating a problem for me but we are going very well at the moment. Andy Rodgers was left on the bench and Jordon Brown and Leighton McIntosh came on as substitutes.

“Everyone is playing a part in this good run. The competition means everyone has to step up and perform and they are doing that.”

The Peterhead manager is also pleased his side has come into promotion contention largely unnoticed and added: “I am happy for everyone to talk just about Dunfermline and Ayr.

“It suits us perfectly as we can just concentrate on our performances.

“Peterhead is a bit out of the way and perhaps people forget about us. I also think having the Petrofac Cup final against Rangers is keeping everyone motivated.

“Everyone wants involved in the cup final and the promotion bid.

“The players were all great against Stranraer and showed great hunger. We kept going and looked for more goals despite having the points won already.

“The players on the bench and others who have missed out have shown a great attitude. They may all have very important roles in the months ahead.”

Stranraer manager Brian Reid said: “We had 10 poor performances. I did not see that result coming as we have been good recently.

“Perhaps it was a reaction to the Celtic cup game last week, but it was a bad day at the office.”
