Rangers v Peterhead: The Blue Toon goal machine

Rory McAllister is a man on a mission as his team gets ready for their Petrofac Training Cup final against Rangers on Sunday.

With eight goals so far in the competition, and having scored in every round en route to the final, the Blue Toon attacker would love to add a goal in the showpiece game to his list of rapidly-growing accomplishments.

But he knows that will be easier said than done against overwhelming favourites Rangers.

He said: “We’ve beaten Rangers before, but this is a completely different team now from the one we beat three years ago and it is going to be so much harder. They beat us 3-0 in the League Cup at the start of the season and it was clear then how much they had improved – that has been shown by their form in the Championship and reaching the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

“But you never know what can happen in a one-off game.

“You can be sure we will go to Hampden with a plan which will give us the best chance of creating an upset and winning the cup. I’m no different from any other player at the club. We wanted to test ourselves against the best and Rangers are the best team we could have faced in the competition.

“Financially it’s great for the club, but for the players it will be special as well.

“It will be my first cup final and most of the players in the squad are in the same position, so the fact we’re playing Rangers in a cup final at Hampden makes it all the more special.”

McAllister’s form in the competition has been outstanding, with his five-goal haul in his side’s incredible 5-3 win at Falkirk in August easily one of his career highlights.

But he knows Sunday could beat it.

He said: “The five goals against Falkirk were incredible. It’s the only time I’ve scored five in a game, but it didn’t quite beat the feeling of scoring the winner against Rangers at Ibrox in 2013.

“That was really special, but if we were to win the final that would trump the lot.

“It’s going to be a very special day in the history of the club. Peterhead is a great family club and the people who work behind the scenes there are so special. The cup final is for them to enjoy too and hopefully we can make it a special day.”
