Dodds challenges Fox to earn recall to Scotland squad

Ross County assistant manager Billy Dodds has challenged goalkeeper Scott Fox to earn a recall to the Scotland squad by continuing to impress for the Staggies.

Fox produced a superb display to help County secure a 1-1 draw against Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday, making several fine saves to keep Mark Warburton’s side at bay prior to Lee Wallace’s 71st-minute goal which rescued the hosts a point.

Former Partick Thistle goalkeeper Fox has previously caught the eye of Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, who called him up for the first time for a friendly double-header against US and Norway in November 2013 during his time with the Jags, before handing him another call up for friendlies against Italy and France last summer.

Although Fox remains uncapped, Dodds wants the 29-year-old to put himself back in contention by maintaining his consistency for the Dingwall men.

Dodds said: “Scott is one of the most consistent in the league. That’s what he has to keep doing if he wants to be involved.

“Scott has been in the squad before and I am sure that he wants to be back there. We think he should be in the squad but there are a lot of good goalkeepers in there.

“If he keeps playing consistently well then it will do his chances no harm at all.”

Dodds was thrilled with Saturday’s result against the Light Blues, which followed back-to-back losses against Kilmarnock and Motherwell and also ended a run of six games in which Jim McIntyre’s side had conceded two or more goals.

Former Rangers and Aberdeen forward Dodds feels the Highlanders can take great encouragement from the display and he added: “Rangers pinned us back in the second half . we probably could have won it in the first half with the chances we made. For me and the gaffer, the first half was probably our best performance of the season. We were excellent at taking the ball, being brave and passing it and creating chances.

“The boys know we need to cut out individual errors. On Saturday, we didn’t have any. We were heroic at times by getting bodies on the line.

“We have to do that when we go to Parkhead or Ibrox. There was just one spell, in terms of confidence, where it could have led on to two or three but thankfully that’s it over.

“All round, we were really pleased with the first half and really pleased with the point considering the disappointment of the previous two games.
