Kait and Tansey set to boost Staggies as they look for fixtures lift

Ross County interim co-manager Steven Ferguson hopes the Staggies are handed three home fixtures next week when the Premiership split schedule is revealed.

County leapt off the bottom of the table on goal difference following their impressive 4-0 victory against Partick Thistle on Tuesday and host Hibs tomorrow in their final fixture before the split.

Of the other teams who will join them in the bottom six, the Staggies are due to play Dundee, St Johnstone and Motherwell at Victoria Park, which would take them to an equal number of 19 fixtures both at home and away. County finished last term with only 18 league home games, with 20 away from home.

Ferguson is determined to make home advantage count after Tuesday’s emphatic win and he said: “It would be a tremendous boost if we get them.

“Everyone has been telling us we should have three games at home and which teams we should play. How they know, I’m not so sure.

“But home advantage is huge, especially when you get a little bit of momentum and find a consistency. With the Hibs game being at home on Saturday, that would make it four of the last six at home.

“The fans against Partick were fantastic. Myself and Stuart were trying to take the responsibility away from them by saying we needed to give them something to cheer about.

“But, to be fair, all the staff and players acknowledged they did turn out in numbers and they were vocal in backing the team. Four goals helps – we get that, but if we can make sure we continue to work together in the next few homes games then it will be a nice place to play.”

Ferguson says County’s midfield options for the run-in will be boosted by the return of on-loan pair Mattias Kait and Greg Tansey.

Estonian international Kait, on loan from Fulham, is clear of concussion, while Tansey, who joined from Aberdeen, is close to a return following a groin operation.

Ferguson added: “Mattias is a player Stuart and I like. It’s just unfortunate since we’ve come in we haven’t had the chance to utilise him.

“He has a good pedigree as an international player but he came back from international duty injured and took another head knock in the Development League game he played.

“I’m sure he will have a part to play in the remaining games.

“Greg is good. We’re looking to get him a couple of games within the next week. Again, everything is starting to clear up so Greg, I’m sure, will also have a huge part to play in the remaining games.”

English forward Inih Effiong has become the latest player to be released from his contract with the Staggies. Effiong was signed by previous manager Owen Coyle from English National League side Woking on an 18-month contract in January, but made only three appearances.

The 26-year-old joins another of Coyle additions, winger Chris Eagles, in parting ways with the Dingwall club this week.
