Billy Mckay rallies Ross County for a surge after the split

Ross County's Billy McKay (R) celebrates his goal against Hibs with Alex Schalk.

Ross County forward Billy Mckay reckons the Staggies have shown they are up for the challenge of securing Premiership safety.

County had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to high-flying Hibernian on Saturday, with Mckay’s first-half opener cancelled out by a 90th-minute goal from substitute Oli Shaw.

The result, which follows Tuesday’s emphatic 4-0 win against Partick Thistle, moves the Staggies a point clear of the bottom-placed Jags and Mckay feels County have set themselves up well for their five post-split fixtures.

Mckay said: “I think we are enjoying our football. You saw from the game on Tuesday, and then again on Saturday, how hard we worked for each other.

“You’ve got to relish this test, you can’t hide. If you hide you are almost as good as down.

“I think every single one of us is stepping up at the minute and I think we
can step up for the last five games and get out of it.

“We have got to fight for everything and we are doing it.

“You look at the way the lads defended, we were so close to getting the win. I thought every single player on the pitch gave 100% and we were so unlucky not to get the win.

“We are going to fight from now until the end of the season.”

Former Caley Thistle attacker Mckay has found a prominent role up front alongside Alex Schalk under interim co-managers Stuart Kettlewell and Steven Ferguson and the Northern Irishman added: “I feel like my season is just getting started. There are only five games left which I’m a bit disappointed about.

“It’s a massive five games and hopefully I can play a big role in them.”
