Away form key to Staggies’ hopes, says Kettlewell

Ross County co-manager Stuart Kettlewell feels picking up points on the road will be an important factor in the Staggies’ success in the Premiership this term.

The bulk of County’s seven points have come at home following wins against Hamilton Accies and St Mirren, with the Staggies also claiming a point in a 0-0 draw against Hearts at Tynecastle in August.

Although Kettlewell feels County’s form in Dingwall will be the grounding for their campaign, he is also keen to rack up the points away from home, with County facing Motherwell at Fir Park today.

Kettlewell said: “I think the foundation is built from your home form, I will still stand by that, but I think the away form is massive as well.

“We have had one point on the road so far in the league, and we really want to go and try to add to that.

“We want to try and find a form away from home, as difficult as that can be in this league. We want to see if we can get points on Saturday as a starting point, but moving forward for us it’s not all going to be about playing at home.

“We certainly have to develop a style of play that’s more than competitive away from home.”

Motherwell go into today’s game on fine form, with three straight victories moving them to third in the table.

Kettlewell feels Stephen Robinson’s men have not been given the credit due for last weekend’s 3-2 away victory over Hearts, adding: “I think it’s often the way of Scottish football, we focus on the deficiencies of everybody else rather than what was a very good performance from Motherwell again.

“They have obviously been on a very rich vein of form. We felt that a little bit ourselves when we went to Tynecastle. We felt we performed really well, but the focus switched on to the negative side and what people felt Hearts were not doing.

“We have certainly not missed that fact. We were not looking at what Hearts were doing, we were more focusing on what Motherwell were able to do, the number of chances they created and how comfortable and assured they looked in the game.

“That fact is not missed on ourselves and we are braced for a stern test this weekend.”

Midfielder Lewis Spence and Lee Erwin have returned to full training but remain short on match fitness, and will miss out along with Callum Morris, Ross Draper and Don Cowie, while Iain Vigurs is a major doubt with a foot injury.
