Ross County midfielder Graham Carey had no complaints following his side’s opening-day defeat by St Johnstone, but has warned the Staggies’ players must cut out the errors if they are to be a Premiership force this season.

Carey produced a man-of-the-match performance despite the Staggies falling to a 2-1 loss to the Saints at Victoria Park yesterday, with Irishman Carey impressed with the opposition’s performance.

He said: “I didn’t think there was much in the game, it was quite scrappy early on and both sides had chances, but St Johnstone showed their experience in the Premiership to see out the game and we have no complaints, the best team won.

“I felt good and I felt sharp for the first game of the season. It normally takes one or two games to get into it but I felt really fit.

“It’s about the team though but I’m encouraged with the options we’ve got up front and we caused them a lot of problems, but silly mistakes at the back cost us.

“If we can eradicate them, which I know we can, there are a lot of positives we can take.

“In the first game of the season, at home, you want to start with a win but that wasn’t to be and St Johnstone were the better team.

“It was going to take something special to beat their goalkeeper Alan Mannus.

“He was excellent and some of his saves were exceptional. He had no chance with our goal which was a great header from a great delivery.”

Carey was impressed with the goalscoring debut of forward Jake Jervis and the former Celtic man is looking forward to supplying the 22-year-old with the service to thrive, as County look to get their first points of the season on board away to Partick Thistle on Wednesday.

Carey added: “It’s great to have someone like Jake up front as he doesn’t try to get involved too much in the play.

“He likes to score goals and he’s going to do that if he keeps getting in the box.

“His movement in the box is great, so if we keep supplying him he’ll hopefully get many more for us.

“Before the team was named we felt it could have been anyone from the squad starting.

“The competition will bode us well for the season ahead.

“Hopefully, we can pick up three points on Wednesday to kick-start our season.”
