Ross County: Fraser always knew club could climb out of relegation zone

Ross County defender Marcus Fraser was always confident his team-mates could claw their way out of the Premiership relegation zone.

A fortnight ago the Staggies were brushed aside 4-0 by Aberdeen at Pittodrie, stretching their winless run to 12 matches and leaving them six points adrift at the foot of the table.

But Jim McIntyre’s side has responded with a crucial 3-2 victory against Motherwell before defeating Partick Thistle 3-1 at Firhill on Saturday.

Craig Curran and Raffaele De Vita had given the Staggies a two-goal lead against the Maryhill Jags before Jags forward Lyle Taylor reduced the deficit.

But former Celtic player Fraser netted a superb third to give County the win which moved them up to 10th position, above Motherwell on goal difference and St Mirren on goals scored.

With 12 games remaining, the 20-year-old is confident County can preserve its Scottish Premiership status.

He said: “All of the players kept believing in themselves. We knew there were big games coming up for every team in the league, but we just had to concentrate on our matches.

“We are trying to put a run of wins together and we have now managed to get two in a row, which pushes us up the table a bit.

“It was great to pick up another win at Partick and to get a goal was a nice bonus for me.

“I had a glance up and didn’t see anyone in support so I just knew I had to hit my shot across the goalkeeper, I caught it well and thankfully it went in the back of the net, which was a great feeling.”

Ross County now face a home match against Dundee this weekend before Partick Thistle make the journey up to Dingwall in two weeks.

Fraser added: “We can’t rely on another team making a mistake. We have to have a game plan and impose ourselves on games.

“We are not going to set ourselves any massive targets. We are just going to take it week by week, performance by performance.

“We will analyse what went well and what we could have done better before moving on to next week.

“Wins build confidence and everyone will be buzzing for our next match.”
