Ross County v St Mirren: Staggies wary of ‘desperate’ Buddies

Ross County manager Jim McIntyre is looking to continue the fine start to the season.
Ross County manager Jim McIntyre is looking to continue the fine start to the season.

Ross County manager Jim McIntyre will not rest until the threat of relegation from the Scottish Premiership is lifted.

The Staggies can take a huge stride towards safety when they face St Mirren at Paisley tonight as a win would end the possibility of finishing bottom and would also push them six points ahead of second-bottom Motherwell in the play-off spot.

County’s run of seven wins from the last eight games will make them confident of doing enough to ensure they remain in the top flight for the fourth consecutive season.

The superb form was capped by McIntyre being named manager of the month and midfielder Raffaele De Vita picking up the player of the month award for March.

McIntyre said: “St Mirren have to win but it is not impossible for them to get out of it. The likelihood of us or Motherwell losing that many games? You just don’t know.

“St Mirren will be desperate to put on a performance in front of their supporters. For us, the focus is still the same – to try to win the next game. It’s the last fixture before the split and we want to make sure we are going into the final five games with momentum intact.”

McIntyre praised the resilience of defender Scott Boyd, who recovered to play on after sustaining a black eye in a challenge with St Johnstone forward Steven MacLean in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory against the Perth side.

McIntyre confirmed the defender is in contention to play against the Buddies, adding: “Scott was caught across the eyeball. He did well to play on because his eye was in a mess at half-time. But he was adamant he wanted to stay on. He’ll be fine.”
