Joey Barton has already been suspended for three weeks by Rangers

Rangers have suspended midfielder Joey Barton for three weeks following his training ground bust-up last week.

The midfielder was banished from training last Tuesday following a heated argument with team-mate Andy Halliday and was informed he had been suspended for a further three weeks upon his return to Ibrox today.

As a result of his suspension the former Manchester City and Everton midfielder will miss his side’s Betfred Cup quarter-final against Queen of the South and Sunday’s Scottish Premiership trip to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen.

Barton will also sit out the league match against Partick Thistle on October 1 but will be available for the trip to Caley Thistle on October 14.

Barton refused to comment on discussions with the club when he left Ibrox this morning with the club releasing a brief statement confirming his suspension this morning.

The statement read: “Joey Barton has today been suspended by the club and will not return to Ibrox or Auchenhowie for a period of three weeks.

The manager, Mark Warburton, and club believe that time and space is required for both the club and the player to assess all that has happened.

Neither party will make any further statement or comment on this issue.”
